The most common use of the word urban refers to something belonging to the city. Recently, the word urban has taken on a second meaning: "dominated by a racial minority, usually of black origin." The term is often used as “urban youth,” “urban cities,” and “urban music/fashion.” This usage of the term urban is inappropriate because it has similar connotations to ghetto or inner-city, which is typically used to describe something that is subpar, but implies a relationship to black communities. By describing things as urban or substandard, we are implying an inferiority and unworthiness of the black community.
The only appropriate usage of the word urban would be when describing something “of the city” versus something rural, as this conveys no racial meaning.
