The official definition for a catfight is a fight between two women. The reason for the name catfight is because a fight between two women involves scratching, hair pulling and shirt shredding. It can also be used to describe women insulting each other verbally or engaged in an intense competition for men or power. The term insinuates that women are unable to fight and are too weak to throw punches. Catfight is a hypersexualized term that was used in the 1950s pornographic world to depict women, barely dressed, fighting. Over time the word is commonly used to describe women fighting and shouted at women when they are seen in a heated discussion. These gendered based insults are used to put women down so that they don’t become a threat to the patriarchal order.
