A violent or abusive pattern of behavior among people within a household that is used to gain or maintain power over an individual. Though most commonly used to describe violence by a partner (same-sex or opposite-sex) in a romantic or dating relationship, domestic violence can be perpetrated by a parent, sibling, roommate, etc. Likewise, anyone can be a victim (or survivor) of domestic violence, regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or socioeconomic status. In the United States, an average of more than ten million people face abuse annually.

Domestic violence includes physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence an individual. It is any behavior that frightens, intimidates, terrorizes, manipulates, hurts, humiliates, or blames someone. With domestic violence, incidents are rarely isolated and typically escalate in frequency and severity.

It is commonplace to see domestic violence and intimate partner violence used interchangeably to describe relationship violence. However, the phrase intimate partner violence is more specific in illustrating violence carried out by a partner in a romantic relationship, for romantic partners may or may not live together in the same household. Likewise, violence can be carried out within any relationship. Notably, the phrase intimate partner violence can also include when a romantic relationship ceases, yet one’s partner remains abusive. On the other hand, the phrase domestic violence can become conflictive because it often implies an internal, isolated situation that must be solved solely by the people involved in the relationship. When in reality, we know that relationship violence is a universal issue.
