The word exotic is often used as a compliment to describe the “uniqueness” of non-white people, but we should think twice before we use the word. Not only does the word exotic imply that there is one beauty ideal- the white standard of beauty, but it also implies a strangeness or foreignness of other styles of beauty. Using this term perpetuates the ideal that only the white standard of beauty is normal and dehumanizes and objectifies non-white people. The word exotic has long been used to describe objects or places and therefore is inappropriate to describe a human. Using this term fetishizes non-white women based on their divergence from the standard model of beauty. This then causes non-white women to be viewed as objects to be conquered and fuels the sex-trafficking market.
