An offensive term for the Romani, or people who originated in northern India and now live chiefly in Europe and smaller numbers throughout the world. Moreover, one may also use the term gypsy to describe a person who wanders or roams from place to place. Notably, the media often portrays “gypsies” in two detrimental manners: a dirty beggar who exploits social welfare or a hypersexualized magical being that threatens the patriarchy. Seeing this, the term gypsy becomes dangerous to those of Romani descent, particularly Romani women, for it evokes romanticized images of poverty and sexualization. At the same time, it also ignores their long history of persecution in Europe and their recent experiences of hate crimes, inadequate health care, segregated education, and forced sterilization. The term gypsy should be avoided due to its enforcement of racist and dehumanizing stereotypes towards the Romani.
