Illegal

Only actions can be illegal, not humans. Using the term illegal to describe immigrants who don’t have the proper visa or permits to stay in a country is dehumanizing and strips them of their basic Human Rights. Human Rights are universal, and should not succumb to arbitrary borders or frontiers created by humans. Using this term suggests that immigrants are undeserving of fair treatment and of a lower class. The word illegal is not neutral and implies criminality. Using the terms “non citizen,” “immigrant in an irregular situation” or “immigrants who don’t have the proper visa or permits to stay in a country” are more appropriate because they can more properly describe the situation without degrading the person and neglecting their humanity.
