Mixed race

Using the term mixed race to describe someone of mixed parentage or dual heritage is a lazy way of not acknowledging diversity and generalizes various cultures and heritages, lumping them all into the same category. This implies that a pure race exists and that all others belong in a separate category. Race and perception are intricate, and each person’s experience varies. To some, using the term mixed race feels too broad to define themselves as each person has their own complex history. Being mixed race isn’t something that defines someone’s identity, but instead indicates their parentage or heritage. If somebody chooses to define themselves as mixed, then it is appropriate, but it is inappropriate to expect that anybody owes an explanation for their identity or heritage.
