A stereotypical term that refers to a minority group whose members are perceived as achieving a higher degree of socioeconomic success, particularly in a manner that contrasts with other minority groups. This term is mainly used in discussions of race, with the model minority designation frequently placed upon Asian Americans. However, it is important to note that the model minority myth can be applied to any minority group, whether ethnic, racial, or religious. For instance, Jewish people are often stereotyped as being good with money. Though Asian Americans are a non-monolithic, nuanced community with diverse experiences, the model minority myth may cause individuals who identify as Asian Americans to meet certain cultural expectations. Some examples include:

  • Naturally good at math, science, or technology
  • Hardworking and "living the American dream"
  • Submissive and "law-abiding citizens"

Many critics believe this term perpetuates white supremacy while also creating division between various disadvantaged groups (particularly people of color). The model minority myth establishes a hierarchy in which Asian Americans are at the top, ultimately putting people of color against one another rather than working together to achieve liberation for all.

Not to mention, this term also erases the experience of racism for Asian Americans. Given that the model minority myth claims Asian Americans are immensely successful, they must therefore not face the impacts of systematic discrimination. This is far from the truth…

  • 1 in 7 Asian immigrants in America today is undocumented and faces potential deportation
  • Rising hate crimes against Asian Americans in the wake of COVID-19
  • The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882
  • Japanese Internment
