Person of color
The term “person of color” is used to describe all people who are not white and emphasizes the common experiences of systematic oppression and racism that they face. Person of color is a useful term because it avoids defining someone by a negative (“non-white”) and does not “other” them. In US history, the term has been used exclusively to describe black people, but is currently used to describe people of African, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, Asian or Pacific Island descent, with the intention of being inclusive. This terminology is useful in social justice, and in civil rights and human rights contexts.
