The history of the word redskin is largely debated, but most sources point towards white settlers naming the Native Peoples “red men” as a way to distinguish them by their “red skin.” The word redskin eventually formed out of this belief, and was used for many years. Decades later, the word "redskin" began to take on a negative and violent connotation. The word eventually went from being an identifying term to a derogatory slur.
