Hood

The terms Hoodlum, Hoodrat and Hood are used as adjectives to describe people who appear to be “thugs.” This usage of the term dates back to the 1870s and is inappropriate because it insinuates an inferiority of people and negatively stereotypes them. The term is often used to describe people who commit crimes, but we can’t judge people as criminals with language, before the judicial systems proves them guilty.

The difference between the expressions "The hood" and "Hood" is that the first is used to refer to a neighbourhood and the second to a person.

Recomendación

The term should be avoided as it dehumanizes the people it describes and reduces them to a label.
