African american

The problem with using the term African-American to describe all black Americans is that not everyone who is black identifies as African. It is absurd to label all people of a darker skin color in relation to a nationality. As the Bloomberg journal states, "ethnic descriptions used in hyphenation with American are best reserved for immigrants or first-generation Americans." The term African-American should no longer be used to describe Americans of African descent because contemporary black American culture is no longer strongly-tied to African culture. This umbrella term is not inclusive and only fits some black people, and therefore should only be used if the person in reference prefers this term. If you are unsure of what to call someone, the best thing to do is ask them what they would prefer to be called.
