Although the legal definition of alien is a person “relating, belonging, or owing allegiance to another country or government,” the connotation is negative and demeaning. While an alien does not necessarily have to be an immigrant who doesn’t have the proper visa or permit to stay in a country, the term is mostly used to describe this population. Dehumanizing is a process that starts with language, and by referring to human beings as aliens we are taking away part of their humanity and treating them as an “other.”
