An acronym that has evolved into an academic term that stands for Black, Indigenous, and person of color. It focuses on the distinctive effects of racism (such as mass incarceration, police violence, lack of access to healthcare, etc.) that disproportionately affect Black and Indigenous people. By including the two letters for Black and Indigenous, the phrase seeks to encompass previously silenced voices of darker-skinned people in the global narrative of humanity. Above all, the ambition is to demonstrate solidarity between communities of color while also rejecting an erasure of Black and Indigenous identities.

Recomendación

Avoid using the BIPOC acronym unless you have a character limitation. Rather, use the complete words “Black, Indigenous, and person of color” to adhere to people-first language.
