A term referring to the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of an aspect of a culture that is not your own and using it for your personal interest, especially without showing an understanding or respect for that particular culture. Cultural appropriation can range from purchasing a piece of clothing with a significant cultural symbol but simply using it as a fashion statement or taking a photo of a ritual ceremony to get an aesthetic Instagram post. Whatever the case may be, the commonality for appropriation is the act of “cherry-picking” an aspect of another culture without engaging in a cultural exchange with members of that particular culture. With all, cultural appropriation becomes harmful for it has the power to reinforce stereotypes, contribute to oppression, and silence the voices of marginalized groups.
Cultural appropriation is not to be confused with cultural appreciation, or the respectful borrowing of elements from another culture to understand, diversify, and connect with others cross-culturally. Some examples include eating Nigerian food at an authentic Nigeran restaurant or wearing a South Asian bindi when invited to do so at an Indian festival. Seeing this, cultural appreciation involves a cultural exchange between individuals. As a result, there arises a mighty recognition of beauty across cultures.
