Victim Mentality

The belief that one is always a victim or that bad things will always happen in life. It is often rooted in trauma, distress, or pain. Seeing this, a victim mentality stems from a feeling that the world is against you – family members, romantic partners, coworkers, etc. Likewise, those with a victim mentality perceive everything as being out of their control and irreversible no matter the changes made; thus, they fail to take the proper measures to attempt to fix unfavorable outcomes. Lastly, this mentality causes an inability to take responsibility, along with the tendency to blame others for one’s own misfortune consistently.

Significantly, one must try not to confuse an actual victim with a victim mentality. Though it is possible to be both a victim and have a victim mentality, not every victim has a victim mentality. Correspondingly, it is ineffective to assume all victims inhabit this mentality, for it often villanizes the victim and promotes the thinking that they “brought victimhood upon themselves.”
