For the longest time, the general depiction of women in media, and the gender based stereotypes shows them to be needy, unable to be self-sufficient and constantly reliant on men. Through this depiction, the term high-maintenance was created. Someone who is described as high-maintenance requires a lot of attention, money or emotional investment. This term is used to describe single women who have no ambitions but to marry rich. When a woman is called high-maintenance it implies that she is a lot of work, and very demanding. Men who lead similar lives, expecting to be doted on are not called high-maintenance as it holds a feminine connotation. Describing a woman as high-maintenance diminishes everything that she’s done and places a monetary value on her worth.
