Abrasive is a gendered based insult. When women work in the professional domain they often feel the pressure of competing against men. Women have more at risk when taking high powered positions and in order to prove themselves they become driven and passionate about what they do. When women are seen being competitive, their peers label it by using gendered insults. Abrasive is used to describe someone who is rude and unfriendly. Kieran Snyder a linguist and tech entrepreneur created a study analyzing performance reviews between men and women. She found that men received critical feedback, in forms of constructive suggestions for improvement, while women were given negative personal criticism. The word abrasive alone was used 17 times in the women’s reviews and not once in the men’s. Once again women are judged not by their professional ability but by their assumed gender.
