Nappy

A derogatory term to describe the Afro-textured or tightly coiled hair of Black people. The term likely originated in the seventeenth century from the word nap, which then described the frizzled threads raised from a piece of fabric. However, there is also speculation that nap was redefined as a discriminatory phrase for the kinky hair of enslaved Africans, in connection with the cotton fields they worked to drive the colonial economy. Significantly, hair texture is often the most specific characteristic that distinguishes Black people from other races, and the term nappy was historically used to make Black people inherently aware and ashamed of this distinction.

Presently, nappy still may be used as a racist force. Seeing this, nappy is a contextual and racial term that requires thought before its usage. Many argue that the term is seen as a playful greeting in the Black community (a sense of reclaiming the word) but offensive if said by people of other races. The argument is that anyone who does not have Afro-textured hair cannot understand the weight of the term and the triggers to previous experiences that it can bring up.

Recomendación

We are using capitalization to recognize a larger, interconnected community of Black people with its own cultural, historical, and social significance.
